Description

A recent arrival from Iran is this beautiful, two-face 'chanteh' or vanity-bag, made by the Lori-Bakhtiari nomads in the Chahar Mahal region of western Persia circa 1920.

The face depicting the powerful '8-pointed star', a symbol of protection, is in lustrous knotted-pile whereas the back of the bag is woven in soumak technique featuring two pale-green symbols.

Vanity-bags were made by women for their use only and might contain a mirror, coins or an important piece of jewellery. This bag is in excellent condition.
