Very Large Pine Double Wardrobe with Two Drawers, Circa 1880 (Dismantles)

19th century
For Sale by Pinefinders
Description

This impressive old pine double wardrobe dates to around 1880 and remains in excellent order for a piece of its age. A broad cornice crowns the two panelled doors, with gently shaped sides and bracket feet giving it a handsome, substantial presence. Two strong drawers sit beneath the cupboard and both run freely.

The interior is empty at present, although there are signs it previously held shelving. A new hanging rail will be fitted within the advertised price. For buyers who would like extra storage, we can also add a shelf above the rail for around £40.

Original period details include the left-hand catch and a substantial box lock, supplied with its original key; both are working correctly. The wardrobe dismantles for access, making it suitable for most stairways. We can deliver personally to much of the UK and reassemble it on arrival.

Reference: N1757F

The current-condition price is £1,060. Alternatively, we can fully restore and wax the wardrobe for £1,190.

Measurements: 79½ inches high, 72 inches wide and 25 inches deep, with an internal depth of 20½ inches. Width and depth are the maximum external measurements.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian country pine wardrobes, constructed during the late nineteenth century, typically feature solid Scots or European pine construction, deep panelled doors, simple turned wooden knobs, and plain bracket feet or plinths. Larger models were engineered to dismantle into sections to facilitate transport up narrow domestic staircases.

These wardrobes were built using solid pine with traditional joinery methods, including hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers and mortise-and-tenon framing for the doors. Internal fittings often included timber hanging pegs or later brass rails, alongside hand-forged or cast iron hardware.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display indications of age such as saw marks on unrefined backboards, natural timber shrinkage across panel joins, original keyhole escutcheons, and historic wear around the drawer runners and handles.

A natural pine wardrobe acts as a warm anchor in contemporary rooms alongside neutral paint palettes, textured linen bedding, and modern metal accents. Its generous scale provides significant visual weight, balancing lighter modern furnishings.

Apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year using a soft cloth to nourish the timber and protect the surface patina. Maintain stable ambient humidity and position the wardrobe away from direct heat sources such as radiators to prevent timber shrinkage or cracking.
