StyleRustic Farmhouse
MaterialPine, Iron

MotifsFielded panels, moulded cornice, bracket feet, drawer base

This nineteenth-century antique wardrobe follows a rustic farmhouse style, constructed from honey brown pine with dark iron hardware. The exterior displays a natural wood grain finish, complemented by a substantial moulded cornice at the top and raised fielded panels across the two doors and the fixed side panels. The base incorporates two practical drawers fitted with dark drop handles, and the entire structure is supported by carved paw feet at each corner. The piece stands approximately 210 cm tall, offering ample height for storage within a bedroom or a spacious kitchen. Practical organisation is provided internally by two shelves and a hanging rail situated behind the two lift-off doors. The construction uses a flat-pack arrangement comprising a base, two sides, a back, and a removable cornice, making assembly straightforward. This large wooden storage cabinet suits a traditional country home interior, functioning effectively to store clothing, linens, or kitchen provisions while maintaining a solid timber aesthetic.

FAQs

Traditional pine wardrobes originated predominantly in 19th-century Britain and Europe, designed as freestanding storage cabinets before fitted wardrobes became standard. They typically feature panelled doors, a heavy top cornice, and sometimes lower drawers for extra storage.

These pieces were built using solid pine with traditional joinery techniques, such as hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers and mortise-and-tenon joints on door frames. Many were designed to knock down or disassemble into sections to facilitate transport up narrow staircases.

Authentic period pine furniture often features hand-planed backboards, square-headed or wrought iron nails, original lock escutcheons, and natural shrinkage cracks or uneven wear near the base and handles, indicating age.

An antique pine wardrobe adds visual warmth and texture to neutral bedroom schemes. It functions well in rustic, country house, or Scandinavian-inspired interiors alongside modern linen bedding and contemporary lighting.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources to prevent wood movement and cracking. Apply a high-quality beeswax paste once or twice a year, buffing along the grain to maintain the protective patinated surface.
