Chest of Drawers Fine Rare George II Walnut Small C1740

18th century
Description

A particularly attractive George II period walnut chest of drawers, of desirable small proportions and displaying a stunning rich colour and beautifully developed patina.

The chest features a crossbanded top with re-entrant corners and fine herringbone inlay, with further crossbanding to the sides. The combination of figured walnut, delicate inlay and wonderfully mellow surface gives the piece considerable character and presence.

The drawers are oak lined and traditionally constructed with hand-cut dovetail joints, housed within a substantial oak carcass, demonstrating the quality of its period cabinetmaking.

Raised on characteristic squashed bun feet, the chest has particularly pleasing proportions and retains the understated elegance associated with early Georgian furniture.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

George II furniture from this period is characterised by refined proportion, the use of rich walnut and early mahogany timbers, finely detailed brass hardware, and elegant veneer techniques such as crossbanding and feather edging.

Cabinetmakers during the 18th century primarily utilised walnut, pine, or oak for carcase construction, applying figured walnut or mahogany veneers over solid wood substrates with hand-cut dovetail joints and brass drop handles.

Authentic pieces display hand-sawn drawer linings, hand-cut dovetail joinery, period-correct brass escutcheons and handles with clear signs of hand-casting, alongside genuine age-related wear to the finish and feet.

A period walnut chest provides texture and historical warmth when juxtaposed against neutral walls in modern hallways, living rooms, or bedrooms, serving as a functional storage anchor.

Maintain antique walnut by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying high-quality beeswax paste once or twice a year, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and excessive sunlight.
