Description

Stunning pair of large late 19th century Chinese gilt bronze vases,c1880. These are large and impressive examples weighing together almost 5 kg and standing 25cm tall. The casting and decoration is very fine with a large fire breathing 3 toed dragon covering around two thirds of the main body . The bronze has taken on great colour/patina and overall condition is good in line with age and use (a few very small blemishes etc). FAQs

During the late Qing period, bronze vessels featuring high-relief dragon motifs were produced for both domestic display and export markets. The dragon symbolises power, authority, and good fortune in traditional Chinese iconography.

These vessels were typically cast using the lost-wax process, after which intricate dragon and cloud motifs were hand-chased into the metal. A mercury gilding process or metallic wash was then applied to create a lustrous gold finish.
