Antique Coalport Dessert Plate with Handpainted Rose & Other Flowers Against a Cobalt Ground, C.1820

Description

An antique Coalport dessert plate, measuring 10in in diameter, with moulded wreath and ribbon detail at the rim. The centre is beautifully handpainted with a rose and other flowers, which contrasts beautifully with the cobalt blue and gilded border. Dates to c.1820.

Condition report:

Chips: none

Cracks: a hairline to the rim, seen from the back. Barely visible from the front - only when closely scrutinised and tipped into the light.

Crazing: some light crazing in patches - not all over.

Restoration: none

Gilding/pattern: excellent, only very minor wear.

FAQs

Manufactured during the early nineteenth century by the Coalport Porcelain Works in Shropshire, these dessert plates were created during the Regency era. The factory became renowned for producing refined bone china and soft-paste porcelain decorated with elaborate gilt scrollwork, deep cobalt glazes, and meticulously hand-painted floral subjects.

These pieces were crafted using translucent bone china or soft-paste porcelain bodies. Decoration involved multi-stage kilning, beginning with high-temperature glaze firing, followed by hand-applied cobalt ground layers, enamel paint applications for botanical details, and final hand-gilding using burnished mercury gold.

Coalport items from circa 1820 were frequently unmarked or bore simple painter numbers on the underside. Authenticity is determined through the characteristic soft translucent porcelain paste, minor firing imperfections, hand-painted botanical features showing visible brushstrokes, and heavy, hand-burnished gilded rims.

A decorative porcelain plate can be displayed on an brass stand atop a sideboard, framed inside a clear acrylic display case, or grouped on a wall using discrete wire plate hangers to create a curated gallery focal point.

Clean antique decorated porcelain gently using tepid water and a mild detergent applied with a soft microfibre cloth. Avoid immersion, abrasive pads, and chemical cleaners, as these can strip or scratch delicate overglaze enamels and gilding.
