French Bronze La Source Nude Figure Circa 1900

1900 - 1920
Description

French Bronze La Source Nude Figure Circa 1900

Description

A fine French School bronze depicting La Source, or The Spring, catalogued as after Auguste Moreau and dating from approximately 1900.

This elegant Belle Epoque sculpture portrays a youthful nude female figure turning modestly while gathering flowing drapery around her body. The fabric sweeps around the figure in broad rhythmic folds, suggesting flowing water and reinforcing the traditional association of La Source with purity, renewal and natural abundance.

The modelling combines classical poise with the softer flowing lines characteristic of French sculpture around the turn of the 20th century.

The bronze retains an attractive warm brown-green patina with naturally exposed golden bronze highlights to raised areas. The figure stands upon a shaped polished black marble base, believed to be original.

Auguste Moreau was a member of the prominent Moreau family of French sculptors and became known for elegant allegorical figures, graceful female subjects and decorative compositions combining academic modelling with Romantic naturalism.

Documented versions of La Source bearing Auguste Moreau's signature are known. The present sculpture is unsigned and smaller than a documented large-scale signed example. It is therefore responsibly catalogued as after Auguste Moreau, based upon the model and stylistic comparison, rather than presented as an autograph work by the artist.

No foundry mark has been identified and consequently no particular foundry or casting process is attributed without further documentary or technical evidence.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French bronze sculptures from this era often bridge classical academic figurative art with the organic, fluid lines of the Art Nouveau movement. Sculptors frequently depicted allegorical or classical themes, such as La Source, employing elongated forms and stylized drapery.

Most French bronzes from around 1900 were produced using either the lost-wax (cire perdue) or sand-casting methods. After casting, foundry craftsmen applied chemical patinas using heat to achieve rich dark brown, green, or black surface finishes.

Authentic pieces generally display precise cold-work tooling, hand-finished details in hair and drapery, crisp foundry marks or signatures, and age-consistent wear to the patina around raised surfaces and the base.

A bronze statuette works well as a focal point on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard top, or within a formal bookcase. Placing the sculpture against a light-coloured background or illuminated with directional lighting highlights its silhouetted contours.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth or a natural bristle brush. To preserve the original patina, apply a light coat of clear microcrystalline wax annually and buff gently, avoiding abrasive polishes or chemical cleaners.
