Tibetan rugs and antiques cannot be properly introduced without a brief discussion of the Tibetan plateau, the highest plateau in Asia. There is a fundamental uniqueness that cannot be duplicated.  That is, the plateau's isolation is indigenous to a few animals and plants. Because of the high altitudes, usually well over 2500m, it is cold and the air lacks oxygen. Tibet is very unique with the Tibetan sheep and yak can live only at high altitudes.  Designs of Tibetan rugs have largely been influenced by Chinese designs and sometime incorporated traditional folk motifs.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Khaden is a traditional Tibetan carpet specifically proportioned for sitting or sleeping, usually measuring roughly three feet by six feet. Originating in the Himalayan region, these rugs feature distinct Buddhist iconography, vibrant vegetable dyes, and a unique weaving technique integral to Tibetan culture.

Traditional Tibetan rugs are hand-knotted using local highland wool, known for its high lanolin content and durability, spun over a cotton or wool warp. Weavers employ a unique cut-loop knotting method using a metal rod, producing a soft, dense pile with rich texture.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-spun wool variations, soft natural dye abrash, and a specific knot structure with a distinctive loop pattern visible on the reverse. Older examples often display classic motifs like lotus flowers, clouds, or dragons, and feature minor hand-woven asymmetry.

Due to their bold geometric structures and saturated colours, Tibetan Khaden rugs serve as effective accent pieces in minimalist, bohemian, or eclectic interiors. They work exceptionally well grounded in entryways, beneath occasional chairs, or hung on walls as textile art.

Regular gentle vacuuming without a rotating beater bar prevents dust accumulation within the pile. Address spills immediately by blotting with a clean cloth and neutral wool detergent, avoiding harsh chemical treatments or over-wetting the natural fibres.
