Antique English Silver Jarrow-on-tyne Pocket Watch

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique English silver pocket watch, Jarrow-on-Tyne.

The watch has a three-quarter plate English stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside both of the case backs for Birmingham 1905 together with a sponsor’s mark for William Henry Sparrow listed as an 'importer of gold and silver watches'. The case is in good condition, just gentle unevenness to the back.

The glass lens is in good condition.

The dial is signed with the name of the original retailer, Grant & Son, Jarrow-on-Tyne. There are hairline cracks to the dial but most are very difficult to see with the naked eye.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Antique English silver pocket watches were portable mechanical timepieces produced in the United Kingdom, typically featuring stem-wind or key-wind movements, hallmarked silver cases, and enamel dials styled with Roman numerals.

These timepieces commonly feature sterling or coin silver cases, vitreous enamel dials, brass movement plates, steel balance springs, and glass crystals protecting the face.

Authenticity is verified through hallmark stampings inside the case back indicating silver purity and city assay marks, alongside maker marks and matching movement serial numbers.

Antique pocket watches are frequently displayed on brass or carved wooden watch stands, set under glass domes on desks, or arranged in shadow frames to highlight horological detail.

Maintenance requires periodic mechanical servicing by a specialist horologist, keeping the casing dry, and gently buffing silver surfaces with a dry microfibre cloth to control oxidisation.
