Antique Silver Tavannes Pocket Watch, C1900

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique silver Tavannes pocket watch, c1900.

The watch has a good quality stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is signed with the Tavannes name, and it also has a brevet (patent) number 12091 which relates to an 1896 patent for a pendant-set mechanism. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is 935 silver and there are Continental hallmarks inside both of the case backs. The front of the case is in good condition. The hinged case back has some unevenness.

The glass lens is in lovely condition.

The signed dial has a very faint hairline running from the centre up to number 12, quite difficult to see with the naked eye.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Founded in Switzerland in 1891, the Tavannes Watch Company produced high-grade mechanical timepieces known for precise movements and durable silver cases around the turn of the twentieth century.

These timepieces featured solid silver cases, vitreous enamel dials to prevent tarnishing, blued steel hands, and mineral glass crystals protecting the movement.

Authentic examples feature silver hallmarks or makers marks stamped inside the case back, alongside crisp dial lettering and hand-assembled mechanical movements with jewelled bearings.

An antique pocket watch can be displayed under a glass cloche, suspended from a dedicated pocket watch stand on a desk, or framed in a shadow box alongside period accessories.

Store the timepiece in a dry environment away from magnetic fields, wipe the silver case gently with a microfibre cloth, and have the mechanical movement serviced regularly by a qualified horologist.
