Antique Swiss Silver Pocket Watch, 1917

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique Swiss silver pocket watch, 1917.

The watch has a 7 jewel Swiss stem-winding movement, probably by the Record Watch Company, which is working well. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover which has a few small indentations.

The watch measures 49mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the two case backs for London (import mark), 1917 with a sponsor’s mark for George Stockwell. From 1 June 1907, Stockwells acted as assay agents, facilitating the import into Britain of foreign gold and silver items which had to be assayed and hallmarked in a UK assay office before being released for retail.

The case has crisp engine turned detail to the back and a vacant cartouche to the centre. The hinged case back has some unevenness and a little surface scratching.

The acrylic lens is in nice condition, as is the white enamel dial with original blued steel hands.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

This Edwardian open-face pocket watch dates from the 1910 period and is constructed from silver, enamel, and glass. The exterior displays a silver finish with a white dial, complemented by black Roman numerals, a subsidiary seconds dial, and a crown winding mechanism with a golden tone crown. The piece incorporates blued steel hands and an acrylic lens above the white enamel dial. Measuring 49 mm in diameter excluding the winding stem and loop, the watch is suitable for display in a gentleman's library or collection room. The metalwork shows surface scratching, unevenness on the hinged case back, and small indentations on the inner hinged cover.

Swiss pocket watches from this period are characterized by precision mechanical movements, open-face or hunter case configurations, and vitreous enamel dials displaying Roman or Arabic numerals.

These timepieces were commonly constructed using sterling silver, coin silver, or nickel cases, accompanied by enamel dials, steel hands, and brass gear trains within the internal movement.

Authenticity can be verified by inspecting the movement for maker marks and serial numbers, checking internal case lids for hallmark stamps, and evaluating the dial for period-correct typography.

A pocket watch can be displayed on a specialised brass pocket watch stand, placed under a glass cloche, or incorporated into a decorative desk tray alongside vintage desk accessories.

Keep the timepiece stored in a dry, temperature-controlled environment, clean the outer metal casing with a dry microfibre cloth, and have the mechanical movement lubricated by a professional horologist.
