19th century
Description

Beautiful Victorian mahogany veneered Wellington Chest dating from the mid-19th century period.

An exceptionally elegant and well-proportioned piece, featuring beautifully figured mahogany veneers throughout. The rich warm colour, attractive grain patterns and finely moulded cornice give the chest a wonderfully refined Victorian appearance.

The chest is fitted with seven graduating drawers, each retaining its original turned wooden knobs. The drawers slide effortlessly and provide an excellent amount of practical storage while maintaining the character and quality expected from fine Victorian furniture.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Wellington chest, named after the First Duke of Wellington following his victory at Waterloo, is a tall, narrow chest of drawers characterised by a hinged vertical side flap that locks all drawers simultaneously when secured.

These chests were constructed primarily from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, featuring solid pine drawer linings, hand-cut dovetail joints, and turned wooden or brass hardware.

Key identification features include the iconic hinged locking bar along one front stile, graduated drawer proportions, hand-cut dovetail joinery, original brass lever locks, and carved side corbels.

Given its slender, vertical footprint, a Wellington chest functions exceptionally well in compact spaces such as hallway alcoves, home study corners, or dressing rooms alongside modern artwork.

Maintain the timber by regularly dusting with a soft dry cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice yearly, avoiding placement near radiators or direct sunlight to prevent drying and fading.
