Nw Persian Bagface

1900 - 1920
Description

A delightful little saddlebag with a soft palette and silky wool. A central diamond is flanked top and bottom by half diamonds which hint at an infinite design. I particularly like the surrounding fields with the amorphous blobs that appear to be mutating before your eyes, this artistry is what captivates me and this example although subtle in colour is strong in design.

Good condition with some wear and loss to the ends.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Persian bagface, historically known as a khorjin or mafrash panel, is the decorative woven front portion of a double saddlebag or storage bag crafted by nomadic tribes in Persia for transport and domestic storage.

These textiles are hand-knotted using hand-spun sheep wool pile tied onto wool or cotton warp threads, utilizing natural vegetable and mineral dyes to create shades of terracotta red, indigo blue, and ochre yellow.

Authentic pieces display natural dye variations known as abrash, irregular hand-woven selvedges, flexible handles, and specific geometric motifs characteristic of regional weaving groups such as the Shahsavan or Kurds.

Small textile fragments and bagfaces are frequently mounted behind glass as framed wall art, converted into heavy decorative cushion covers, or used flat as table accents on sideboards and consoles.

Preserve wool fragments by vacuuming lightly with suction only, keeping the textile away from direct sunlight, and relying on professional historic textile conservators for specialist cleaning.
