Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A superstructure desk incorporates a raised upper tier featuring small drawers, open compartments, or galleries above the main writing surface. Originating in 18th-century France as the bonheur du jour, these designs provided organised storage for correspondence, stationery, and small personal belongings.

These desks are predominantly constructed using solid wood frames finished with birds eye maple veneers, valued for their distinctive figurative grain patterns. Writing surfaces typically feature skiver leather insets, complemented by turned wooden knobs, cast-metal castors, and pierced brass gallery rails.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-dovetailed drawer joinery, original castors, and natural tone variation across the figured maple veneer. Period desks also display authentic wear on the underside of timber frames and subtle patination on original brass hardware.

Position the desk near a natural light source in a study or bedroom alcove to highlight the warm figure of the maple grain. Pair the piece with a clean-lined desk chair and minimal modern desk accessories to balance the detailed Victorian woodwork.

Maintain the surface by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth along the grain direction. Keep the item away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent veneer cracking, and apply a neutral beeswax polish annually to preserve the finish.
