Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 19th-century Victorian fireplace tool set comprises three polished brass implements including a poker, a shovel, and a pair of tongs, rendered in a warm gold colour. Each tool features a turned handle terminating in a circular loop finial at the top. The shovel blade incorporates intricate pierced metal detailing alongside red and black enamel colouring, while the tongs exhibit ornate scrollwork and foliage motifs near the upper grip. The longest element measures 81 cm high, 18 cm wide, and 4 cm deep. Suitable for placement on a fireplace hearth, these utilitarian items serve as traditional accessories for tending an active fire or enhancing a period interior scheme. They sit directly beside the hearth as decorative elements within a living room, drawing room, or study, complementing traditional English country house interior designs. The matched set offers a functional display for a working or ornamental fireplace grate, combining historical utility with Victorian metalwork craftsmanship.

FAQs

Victorian fire irons are hearth tool sets crafted during the nineteenth century to manage open coal or wood fires. A complete three-piece set typically comprises a poker for tending embers, a pair of tongs for maneuvering burning logs or coal, and a shovel with a decorative or perforated pan for managing ash.

Victorian hearth sets were predominantly crafted from cast or turned brass, wrought iron, or steel. High-end examples frequently combined polished brass handles and shafts with steel working ends to withstand direct heat while offering decorative appeal.

Authentic period fire irons generally feature heavy, solid cast construction rather than hollow lightweight metal. Look for threaded screw joints connecting the shafts and handles, hand-chased or cast decorative details, and natural oxidisation within deep crevices.

Positioning a set of polished brass fire tools on a stone hearth or within a tiled fireplace alcove adds warmth and structural texture. The golden metallic finish provides a traditional contrast against contemporary dark paint schemes or natural exposed brickwork.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth to prevent soot buildup from damp moisture. To retain aged patina, avoid abrasive chemical cleaners; gentle polishing with a specialist brass cream restores shine while protecting the metal surface.
