Large Hunting Oil Painting King George Returning From Windsor Castle
Mid-19th Century Oil on Canvas After James Pollard (1792–1867)
DESCRIPTION
A fine large-scale mid-19th century oil on canvas depicting King George III returning from the hunt before Windsor Castle, after the celebrated composition by renowned sporting artist James Pollard (1792–1867).
This impressive British sporting and royal subject portrays the monarch on horseback accompanied by mounted attendants, members of the hunting party and a lively pack of hounds. Beyond rises a panoramic view of Windsor Castle, including the famous Round Tower and St George''s Chapel.
Combining equestrian portraiture, architectural interest and royal history, the painting possesses excellent decorative appeal and strong country house character.
Professionally relined and housed in a substantial Victorian gilt frame.
JAMES POLLARD (1792–1867)
James Pollard was one of Britain''s most respected sporting and coaching
...painters, celebrated for his depictions of hunting scenes, racehorses, coaching subjects and royal sporting events.
His works remain highly sought after by collectors of British sporting art and traditional country house paintings. The present work follows one of Pollard''s best-known royal hunting compositions and reflects the enduring popularity of his imagery throughout the Victorian period.
KING GEORGE III & WINDSOR
King George III (1738–1820) maintained a close association with Windsor and Windsor Great Park. Hunting formed an important part of royal life during his reign, making scenes such as this highly desirable among collectors of royal memorabilia, sporting art and British historical paintings.
The combination of royal subject matter and the iconic Windsor Castle backdrop creates an especially appealing display piece.
FRAME
Presented within an impressive Victorian gilt swept frame retaining its original inner slip.
The frame complements the painting beautifully and provides exceptional wall presence suitable for a country house, library, study, hotel, office or traditional interior.

PROVENANCE

Privately Loaned & Exhibited at the Famous Lord Hill Museum.
A closely related pair, including this composition and King George III Hunting in Windsor Forest, was sold by Bonhams San Francisco in 2005 and catalogued as ''Circle of James Pollard''. Those examples measured approximately 106.7 cm x 76.2 cm, virtually identical to the present painting.
CONDITION
Presented in good decorative condition for its age.
The canvas has been professionally relined and mounted onto a later stretcher. The paint surface displays age-related craquelure consistent with a nineteenth-century oil painting together with minor paint loss towards the outer side edges.
The painting retains strong colour and displays particularly well.
The Victorian gilt frame shows expected age-related wear, historic repairs, cracking and minor losses. The outer frame has been sympathetically overpainted in recent years to enhance presentation. The inner slip displays areas of wear and paint loss.
Overall, a highly decorative and ready-to-hang example.
