Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Heavy interior verdigris and oxidisation: long use holding potted plants.
Repoussé armorial shields and chased punchwork: Dutch decorative metalwork technique.
Cast brass paw feet with rubbed high points: natural handling wear.
Variations in contour and tooling between the vessels: hand-formed metalwork.

This pair of nineteenth century Dutch brass jardinieres brings traditional character to an interior. Formed with rounded bodies and wide rolled rims, each vessel displays decorative repousse crests and surface patterns across the polished brass material. The finish shows warm golden tones with natural tarnishing, surface scuffs, and minor dings reflecting age and regular use. One piece stands on three detailed cast claw feet, while the other rests on a slightly different set of small lion paw supports, highlighting their origins as a near pair rather than a uniform set. Each jardiniere measures 14 cm high and 18 cm wide. Position these decorative planters upon a sideboard top or display cabinet within an English country house interior scheme. They function well holding small potted flowering plants, foliage, or dried arrangements to introduce metallic warmth and texture to a room. Alternatively, use them empty as sculptural tabletop display pieces to highlight traditional craftsmanship.

FAQs

Dutch brass jardinieres became popular in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, crafted to hold potted plants and add reflective warmth to domestic interiors. They often featured hand-embossed or repousse decoration depicting crests, coats of arms, or mythical scenes.

These vessels were typically formed from sheet brass that was beaten and worked from the reverse using repousse and chasing techniques to create raised relief patterns. Cast brass components, such as lion-paw or claw feet, were then soldered or riveted to the base.

Authentic period examples feature hand-hammered interior surfaces, visible joinery or seam lines, and uneven metal thickness characteristic of manual metalworking. Look for heraldic iconography, cast claw feet, and natural surface oxidisation inside the vessel.

Place brass jardinieres on a console table, sideboard, or deep window sill to introduce warm metallic accents into a room scheme. They function effectively when housing structured house plants or trailing greenery to contrast against modern or traditional backdrops.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft cloth to prevent build-up in detailed relief work. To maintain age-related patina, avoid abrasive metal polishes and harsh chemicals, and ensure inner pot liners are used to prevent water contact directly with the metal.
