Antique Oak Bureau Bookcase by C.w.s. C1920

1900 - 1920
Sold by MebleinUK
Description

A charming and increasingly scarce antique oak bureau bookcase, manufactured by C.W.S. Ltd Cabinet Works, Pelaw-on-Tyne, retaining its original maker's plaque and original working key with tassel.

This elegant piece combines a glazed bookcase, fall-front writing bureau, and chest of drawers within a compact footprint. The upper section features a leaded glazed door enclosing adjustable shelving, ideal for books, collectables, or decorative displays. Below, the lockable bureau opens to reveal a practical writing surface and fitted interior compartments, while three drawers provide additional storage.

The original maker's badge is a particularly desirable feature, confirming its provenance and authenticity.

About the Maker

C.W.S. Ltd (Co-operative Wholesale Society) Cabinet Works, Pelaw-on-Tyne was one of Britain's largest furniture manufacturers during the late Victorian and early 20th-century period. The Pelaw works in Gateshead produced high-quality oak and walnut furniture, supplying Co-operative stores throughout the United Kingdom.

Furniture bearing the original Pelaw-on-Tyne maker's plaque is increasingly sought after by collectors due to its craftsmanship, durability, and historical significance within British furniture making.

Very good antique condition.

The cabinet is structurally sound and presents beautifully. The original glazed door, lock, working key, bureau interior, and drawers are all in good order. There are minor age-related marks and signs of use consistent with its age, adding to its authentic character.
