Antique English Georgian "Liverpool" Copper One Gallon Measure

19th century
For Sale by Antiques4EU
Description

A scarce Early 19th Century Antique English Georgian Copper One Gallon Measure of seamed construction and uncommon form, bearing upon the neck the Excise Stamp of a Liver Bird, for the City of Liverpool, together with both Georgian and Victorian Excise Stamps. The Weights and Measures Acts of 1824 and 1825 only slowly took effect outside of the main commercial centres of the United Kingdom. Liverpool however, being the country's leading seaport stood in the vanguard of their implementation, and this scarce example of a gallon measure is as fine an example of the period as one is likely to find. For a comparable piece, see Peter Hornsby, "Collecting Antique Copper and Brass", Page 199, Moorland Publishing, Ashbourne, 1989. Measures of this shape are also on occasion referred to as "Manx" measures, and examples so described may be found within the range of Crested Ware models produced by W.H. Goss. cf. Our Stock No. WHG200MSMCOW-33

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian haystack copper measure is a commercial liquid vessel characterized by its conical, broad-bottomed shape resembling a traditional hayrick. Used widely in English public houses and markets during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, these vessels allowed accurate standard measurements for spirits, ale, and milk.

These measures were crafted from hand-hammered sheet copper, joined with brazed or riveted seams to ensure watertight integrity. A lead seal or plug was often applied near the rim or neck to receive government verification stamps from local inspectors.

Authentic pieces feature visible hand-worked construction marks, brazed dovetail or lap seams, and official excise verification stamps impressed into lead plugs near the neck. Variations in thickness and weight further distinguish hand-formed Georgian examples from later machine-pressed reproductions.

An antique copper measure functions well as a focal accent on a kitchen island, sideboard, or open shelving. Its warm metal tone contrasts effectively against scrubbed timber, stone countertops, or neutral lime-washed walls in rustic and traditional settings.

Preserving the original surface patina requires minimal intervention; simple dusting with a soft cloth is recommended. Avoid harsh chemical polishes or abrasive pads that strip aged oxidisation, and store the vessel in a dry environment to prevent corrosion.
