FAQs

A pedestal desk is a large free-standing writing desk supported by two vertical columns containing drawers, known as pedestals. Historically, these pieces feature a central kneehole, a flat writing topfrequently lined with gilt-tooled leatherand solid hardwood construction such as mahogany or walnut.

Traditional pedestal desks are typically crafted using mahogany veneer over solid timber framing, fitted with hand-cut dovetail drawer joints and solid brass bail handles. The top surface often features a gold-leaf embossed leather insert set flush into the wooden surround.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved details, uneven dovetail joints inside the drawers, cast brass hardware showing natural oxidisation, and proper wear patterns around the feet and drawer edges. Furthermore, classic examples constructed in three separate sectionsthe two pedestals and top desk framefacilitate transport.

Integrate a traditional pedestal desk into a contemporary room by pairing it with modern lighting, neutral walls, and minimalist desk accessories. Positioning the desk centrally in a home study creates a focal point while balancing classic woodwork with contemporary textiles.

Preserve the mahogany surface by dusting regularly with a soft microfibre cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish twice yearly along the grain. Clean the leather insert using a slightly damp cloth followed by a specialised leather conditioner to prevent drying and cracking.
