Description

This stunning, double-sided 'chanteh' (vanity-bag) was woven by the Baluch Salar Khani tribe at the end of the nineteenth century in the Khorassan region of north-eastern Persia.

It is in complete, excellent condition and woven in tight soumak technique with highlights of silk.

This must have been a very special bag and a highly-prized possession within the Salar Khani tribe.

A Baluch vanity bag, traditionally called a chanteh, is a small handwoven pouch crafted by nomadic Baluch tribes in eastern Persia and Afghanistan. These compact bags were originally created to hold personal items, cosmetics, or mirror sets during seasonal migrations.

Baluch bags were typically hand-spun from locally sourced sheep wool for the pile and foundation, often supplemented by goat hair for selvedges and occasional cotton accents. Dyes were derived from natural plant and mineral sources, creating rich dark reds, indigo blues, and warm earth tones.

Authentic Baluch textiles display saturated dark colour palettes, heavy wool construction, and distinct geometric motifs such as latch-hooks, diamonds, and stylized floral motifs. Examination of the reverse side usually reveals tight hand-knotting and natural colour variations known as abrash.
