Antique Uzbek Tajik Suzani of Small Size, Silk on Silk, Circa 1900/20.

1900 - 1920
Description

Size: 6ft 0in x 4ft 0in (182 x 122cm).

Antique Uzbek suzani of small size, silk embroidery on ivory coloured silk ground.

Circa 1900/20.

Suzani are silk embroideries that have been woven in Uzbekistan for many hundreds of years, they are treasured family items woven by the ladies of a family usually to celebrate a wedding. They are then used to decorate the inside of the Yurt. They are embroidered in silk on strips of cotton which are then joined together to make the complete item. The suzani is then backed with fine cotton to give it strength and body.

This example is of a small size known as 'nim' suzani, which means half embroidered; the silk embroidery is on a ivory coloured silk field. It was probably woven in Southern Eastern Uzbekistan, near the Tajik boarder. The suzani would have been used as a small cover or wall hanging, they were also used on special occasions to cover the ground for the serving of food, like a table cloth. It is suggested that the white / ivory silk suzani were associated with weddings and possibly used as a canopy over the bride and groom.

The condition is fair with only very slight wear and no repairs, there are a number of historic stains to the ivory silk ground, this is reflected in the price.

The suzani is ready for display.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Suzani is a hand-embroidered textile panel originating from Central Asia, historically crafted by brides and their families in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan as part of a wedding dowry.

Authentic pieces typically feature silk embroidered threads worked onto narrow ground panels of cotton or silk fabric, which are then stitched together to create a larger textile.

Authentic antique Suzanis display hand-stitched seams joining the fabric strips, natural dye variations in the silk thread, and traditional stitches such as tambour stitch or couching.

An antique Suzani can be mounted on a frame as wall art, draped over the foot of a bed, or hung as a decorative tapestry above a sideboard.

Keep the textile away from direct sunlight and high humidity, clean only by gentle vacuuming through a mesh screen, and consult a textile conservator for deeper restoration.
