Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Victorian chests of drawers were produced during the reign of Queen Victoria from 1837 to 1901. They are characterised by substantial proportions, dark hardwoods like mahogany or walnut, turned wooden handles, and practical drawer configurations such as two short drawers over three or four long drawers.

Victorian cabinetmakers predominantly used solid mahogany, walnut, oak, and pine. High-grade veneers were frequently applied to drawer fronts, while internal linings and drawer bases were often constructed from pine or deal using hand-cut dovetail joinery.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers, original brass keyhole escutcheons, and turned wooden or cast metal drawer pulls. Natural signs of age include uneven shrinkage across drawer bottoms, timber oxidisation, and slight irregularities from hand-tooling.

Balance the visual weight of dark mahogany by placing the chest against neutral-toned walls, such as off-white or soft sage green. Accent the top surface with modern ceramics, minimalist lamps, or abstract artwork to create a curated contrast between historic timber and clean contemporary lines.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth following the natural grain of the wood. Apply a quality beeswax polish twice a year to nourish the timber and maintain the patina, while keeping the item away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight.
