Size: 3ft 3in x 1ft 1in (99 x 34cm).

Antique Yomut Turkmen torba with well drawn 'kepse' gul design.

Circa 1890.

These torba were used to decorate the side of a camel during a Turkmen wedding procession, these were prized possessions and formed part of the wedding dowry. The were kept as heirlooms and displayed inside the yurt. This example features two 'kepse' guls on a soft mahogany brown ground, this design is usually found on main carpets by the Yomut.

The torba is in fair condition with slight wear and good pile, there are some old repairs to the lower central border. The back has been removed at some time during the life of this torba. (The repairs are reflected in the price).

A torba is a small, shallow storage bag traditionally hand-woven by nomadic Turkmen tribes, such as the Yomut, to hold household items inside yurts during migrations. The face of the bag features dense, hand-knotted wool pile with geometric tribal emblems known as guls.

Turkmen textiles are hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun wool for both the pile and the warp/weft foundation. Dyes were historically extracted from natural plant and insect sources, producing rich shades of madder red, indigo blue, walnut brown, and ivory.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display soft, lustrous wool, subtle natural dye abrash (colour variations), and precise heraldic gul patterns specific to individual tribes. The back of the weaving will show a firm, tight handle with hand-bound selvedges and natural fringe remnants.
