Burr walnut veneer gained immense popularity during the late 17th century in the William and Mary period, and saw a significant revival during the Victorian and Edwardian eras due to its highly figured, decorative grain patterns.

These pieces typically utilise a secondary softwood or hardwood carcass, overlaid with highly prized burr walnut veneers. Traditional joinery such as dovetailing is standard for drawer construction, complemented by brass or cast metal hardware.

Authenticity is identified by examining the consistency of the hand-cut dovetails, the natural ageing and oxidisation of the timber beneath the finish, traditional hand-applied polishing methods, and the presence of period-correct fixings.

Pairing historical timber furniture with contemporary, minimalist seating and clean architectural lines creates a balanced juxtaposition that highlights the rich texture and warm tones of the wood without overwhelming the space.

Protect the timber from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent veneer cracking. Clean periodically with a soft, dry cloth and apply a microcrystalline wax sparingly to maintain the polish.
