This Georgian yew wood chest of drawers dates from the eighteenth century, specifically around 1720 during the reign of George II. The piece is constructed from timber displaying a warm brown tone with distinct figure grain, complemented by side bracket feet and graduated drawers arranged vertically. Original hardware includes swan neck drop handles alongside pierced brass backplates, paired with visible replacement escutcheons on the drawer fronts. The timber shows natural age and the structure is pine lined. Measuring 92 cm high, 95 cm wide, and 53 cm deep, this item provides practical surface and drawer storage space. A functional addition to a bedroom, landing, or living room, the chest suits traditional English country house interiors as a storage unit for clothing, linens, or household items while serving as a display surface for decorative objects.

FAQs

Georgian chests of drawers typically feature balanced proportions, figured timber veneers, and architectural mouldings. Produced predominantly between 1714 and 1830, these items feature bracket feet or bun feet alongside cast brass drop handles and escutcheons.

Cabinetmakers during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries commonly employed native woods such as oak, walnut, yew, and mahogany for the exterior. Secondary timbers used for drawer linings frequently included pine or oak joined with hand-cut dovetails.

Authentic period furniture exhibits hand-sawn drawer linings, uneven hand-cut dovetail joints, and natural timber shrinkage along the grain over time. Cast brass hardware from this era shows hand-chased details and irregular casting marks on the reverse.

A timber chest serves as a functional focal point in a hallway, bedroom, or living area. Combining dark or highly figured wood grains with neutral wall tones and modern lighting creates a balanced contrast between historical craft and contemporary design.

Apply a high-quality natural beeswax polish sparingly with a soft cloth once or twice a year, buffing gently along the direction of the grain. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight, radiators, and fluctuating humidity levels to prevent timber movement or veneer lifting.
