Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Meiji period cloisonne refers to decorative enamel metalwork produced in Japan between 1868 and 1912. During this era, Japanese artisans refined techniques using delicate brass or copper wires to form intricate compartments filled with coloured glass enamel pastes.

Antique cloisonne trays were constructed on a metal base, typically copper or bronze. Thin metal ribbons or wires were soldered to the substrate to create motifs, which were then filled with powdered glass enamel before being fired and hand-polished flat.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature extremely fine wirework, complex polychrome detailing, and a smooth, hand-polished finish. Minor surface pitting, slight oxidation on exposed metal edges, and natural wear to the base often indicate genuine period manufacture.

A cloisonne tray can be displayed upright on a plate stand atop a sideboard or mantlepiece to showcase its detailed design. Alternatively, it can sit flat on a coffee table or console as a decorative surface accent.

Clean cloisonne enamel by dusting lightly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid immersion in water, harsh chemical cleaners, or abrasive polishes, as moisture can corrode the underlying metal wires and harsh chemicals can damage the enamel surface.
