19th Century Serpentine Sofa in the Hepplewhite Manner

19th century
For Sale by Earl and Rymer
Description

A fine serpentine sofa in the Hepplewhite manner.

An exceptionally elegant 19th-century sofa in the style of a late 18th century piece, featuring a classic serpentine-curved back and out-swept padded arms. The frame is supported by six finely carved legs.

The sofa is currently presented in a "country house" condition. The upholstery is usable but aged and would benefit from being replaced; the piece is sold as a candidate for reupholstery. Please note that the arm joints would benefit from tightening, a standard procedure best carried out by a restorer during the stripping-down phase of the upholstery process.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Hepplewhite style sofa is characterised by Neoclassical design elements, including graceful serpentine or arched backs, exposed carved wood frames, and slender fluted or tapered legs.

Pieces from this period predominantly feature solid or veneered mahogany timber frames paired with traditional upholstery fills such as horsehair, hessian, and natural fibre fabrics.

Authentic items show signs of hand-carved joinery, hand-turned fluted legs, original brass castors, and period-appropriate wear along the wooden rails and frame mortises.

Position the sofa as a focal point against a neutral wall, paired with contemporary side tables or minimalist lighting to contrast its carved historic silhouette.

Keep the wood frame away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking, clean upholstery with a soft brush or gentle vacuum attachment, and polish the timber using natural beeswax.
