Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Swedish nineteenth-century Empire Revival chest of drawers from around 1870, rendered in honey-gold birch veneer, pine, metal, and ebonised wood. The piece presents a rectangular top with rounded front edges and a moulded edge, accommodating four graduating drawers fitted with ornate brass drop handles and blackened shield keyplate escutcheons. Below sits a dark ebonised plinth base with a shaped frieze and old strengthening to the back legs, alongside very minor evidence of treated worm to the back boards and expected surface marks in line with age and use. The chest measures 94.6 cm high by 112.4 cm wide and 46.3 cm deep. Positioned on the floor, the item serves as storage furniture suitable for multiple rooms around the home today. The recently French polished finish highlights the prominent flame birch grain patterns across the front drawers, complemented by the contrast of the dark plinth and metallic hardware.

FAQs

Swedish Empire Revival furniture, popular in the 19th century, draws inspiration from French Neoclassicism and Karl Johan design, featuring clean architectural lines, warm native timber veneers like flame birch, and contrasting ebonised accents.

Makers predominantly utilised indigenous light woods, particularly flame birch and satin birch veneers, set over pine or oak carcases, often paired with metal hardware, keyhole escutcheons, and ebonised plinths.

Authentic pieces feature hand-dovetailed drawer joints, hand-sawn softwood back panels, original iron or brass locks, and characteristic figure in the birch veneer with natural surface age.

The light golden tones and structured silhouette allow the chest to function as a focal point in contemporary bedrooms, entryways, or living spaces, pairing well with neutral tones and modern artwork.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer lifting, dust regularly with a soft lint-free cloth, and apply a neutral beeswax polish annually to protect the surface finish.
