Size: 6ft 9in x 3ft 7in (205 x 108cm).

Antique Uzbek silk ikat panel of traditional design.

Circa 1900 or earlier.

The panel of traditional silk ikat from the Bukhara region; the panel is in semi silk adras technique (silk warps and cotton wefts).

The ikat panel has been re-backed backed with later printed cotton cloth.

The condition is excellent with only very slight signs of use.

This would make an excellent wall hanging or cover.

Ikat is a complex resist-dyeing technique where silk or cotton warp yarns are bound and dyed before being woven into fabric, creating characteristic blurred patterns. Adras refers specifically to a traditional Central Asian weave featuring a silk warp and a cotton weft, historically produced in major weaving centres like Bukhara and Samarkand.

Traditional Uzbek ikat panels from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries are typically crafted from hand-spun silk warps and heavy cotton wefts using natural vegetable and insect dyes, such as madder for reds, indigo for blues, and larkspur or pomegranate skins for yellows.

Authentic period pieces feature narrow fabric widths stitched together vertically, as hand looms were constrained to approximately 30 to 50 centimetres in width. They also demonstrate slight irregularities in the alignment of the ikat motifs, natural dye variations, and a distinct hand-knotted fringe or bound edge.

Ikat panels are frequently mounted onto acrylic or fabric-wrapped display boards for wall hanging, draped over modern sofas and headboards, or tailored into statement cushion covers to add texture, pattern, and rich historical colour to minimalist or bohemian schemes.

To preserve delicate natural dyes and fibres, keep textiles away from direct sunlight and high humidity. Cleaning should strictly be left to specialist textile conservators, and pieces stored flat or rolled around acid-free tubes separated by acid-free tissue paper.
