Size: 7ft 9in x 4ft 3in (237 x 130cm).

Antique Uzbek silk ikat panel of classic design.

Circa 1900 or earlier.

The panel of traditional silk ikat from the Bukhara region; the panel has a fine satin sheen finish known as 'alosha'.

The ikat panel has been re-backed backed with later printed cotton cloth.

The condition is excellent with only very slight signs of use.

This would make an excellent wall hanging or cover.

FAQs

Central Asian ikat, historically known as abrbandi or cloud-binding, flourished along the Silk Road towns of Bukhara and Samarkand during the nineteenth century. These textiles were produced using complex resist-dyeing methods on silk warps before weaving, creating distinctive feathered edge patterns that signified wealth and social prestige.

Uzbek ikats are crafted using pure silk or silk-and-cotton blends (adras) woven on narrow hand looms. Bundles of warp threads are tightly bound with wax-resistant cords and dyed multiple times to form intricate patterns before being strung onto the loom and woven with a plain dark or light weft.

Authentic period ikats consist of multiple narrow woven strips, typically 25 to 40 centimetres wide, stitched together vertically to form wider panels. They display soft tonal variations from natural plant dyes, slight pattern misalignments along the joins, and characteristic blurred edges along the dyed pattern boundaries.

A large silk ikat panel can be mounted on acid-free board and framed as dramatic wall art above a sideboard or bed headboard. Alternatively, it can be draped over a sofa back or used as an accent tapestry to introduce global pattern and rich colour into modern or eclectic interiors.

Antique silk ikats must be kept away from direct sunlight to prevent fiber degradation and colour fading. Cleaning should strictly be handled by a specialist textile conservator, and if hung, the weight must be distributed evenly using a hand-sewn velcro strip lining.
