This Persian tribal rug from 1900 is a flatweave woollen sofreh designed for dining or bread use. The textile displays a terracotta red central field with a curious worked S-motif on the left side, enclosed within a sawtooth frame and serrated indigo blue geometric borders featuring repeating white patterns. The construction is entirely wool, finished with fringed ends and showing gentle fading across the surface alongside a small pale patch near the left edge. Measuring 112 cm high by 115 cm wide and 0.5 cm deep, this item functions well as a floor covering or as a display piece draped over the back of a settee or armchair in a living space or hallway. The piece has undergone hand washing.

FAQs

A sofreh is a traditional flatwoven textile crafted by the nomadic Afshar tribe of south-eastern Persia. Historically used as a spread for communal meals or bread preparation, these textiles feature distinctive geometric patterns and functional flatweave construction.

Sofreh rugs are traditionally hand-woven using locally sourced hand-spun wool for both the warp and weft. The colours are derived from natural vegetable dyes, and the weaving technique combines flatweave structures with geometric motifs.

Authentic Afshar textiles demonstrate hand-spun wool irregularities, natural dye colour variations known as abrash, and characteristic field motifs such as saw-tooth or serrated frame borders. The reverse side reveals tight, hand-woven construction without synthetic backing.

These square-format flatweaves can be placed as accent floor rugs in low-traffic areas, layered over larger neutral floor coverings, or mounted on a wall as decorative textile art. Their saturated tones and geometric patterns add warmth to contemporary and eclectic interiors.

Vacuum the rug gently without a rotating brush attachment to avoid snagging the flatwoven fibres. Clean spills immediately by blotting with a dry cloth, and consult a professional rug specialist for periodic deep cleaning.
