Size: 3ft 7in x 1ft 2in (109 x 35cm)

Antique Ersari Turkmen torba with 'schemle gul design.

Circa 1870.

Torba are shallow wall bags used mainly in tents or yurts for the storage of personal belongings, they were also used to decorate the sides of a camel in a wedding procession. Often only the piled face survives and the plain weave backs have been removed.

This example has a repeat shemle gul design that is also found on weavings by the Saryk Turkmen. The colour is soft with warm reds combined with dark indigo blue. There are a small number of light crimson coloured silk knots in the centre of one or two guls.

The torba is in excellent condition with even wear and medium pile.

A torba is a small, horizontal storage bag traditionally woven by nomadic Turkmen tribes of Central Asia to store household belongings inside yurt tents. The face refers to the decorative front panel of the bag, which is frequently preserved as an individual textile artwork.

Turkmen textiles were hand-knotted using hand-spun sheeps wool for both the pile and foundation. The rich reddish-browns, deep blues, and ivory highlights were achieved using natural vegetable and mineral dyes, such as madder root and indigo.

Authentic 19th-century pieces feature dense knotting, soft wool, and subtle colour variations known as abrash resulting from natural dye batches. They display specific tribal motifs called guls, which strictly correlate to specific clans like the Ersari or Saryk.
