Antique Ersari Beshir Turkmen torba of classic ikat design.

Circa 1880.

An excellent example of Beshir weaving, a classic Beshir ikat design with excellent colour. Note the stars to the central field and the small flowers all around the outside edges. These weavings are often considered to be dowry weavings as they were used to decorate the camel during the wedding procession. This torba is of a large size.

The torba is in excellent condition with very slight wear and full pile, it has a very soft floppy handle.

A torba is a shallow, horizontal bag crafted by nomadic Turkmen tribes, particularly the Ersari, to store household goods inside yurts. Beshir weaves are noted for incorporating unique floral, ikat, and non-geometric patterns influenced by Uzbek and urban Central Asian trade motifs.

Traditional Turkmen torbas were hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun sheep wool for both the pile and foundation. The rich red, navy, and gold shades were achieved using natural vegetable and insect dyes, such as madder root and indigo.
