Description:

This is a fine quality antique English Victorian rosewood chaise longue, made by H. Goodall & Sons of Newcastle, Staffordshire, circa 1860, which has been newly upholstered, in excellent condition.

The Victorian chaise boasts (when facing) a left-hand raised sweeping generously upholstered arm. The arm, which is deep buttoned, has a ruched fascia, embellished with button and cream cord.

The back rest, which is also deep-buttoned, comprises a rosewood moulded frame which sweeps down to the sprung stuff-over seat. The front of the rosewood chaise longue displays a straight moulded reeded frieze.

The Victorian chaise has been newly upholstered with a top-quality floral silk damask material in a biscuit / oatmeal colour, interspersed with wine and cream silk floral upholstery and finished with cream braiding. The chaise stands on its original baluster tulip shaped legs and boasts the original brass and porcelain castors. The up-swept arm and backrest are solid in joint.

This Victorian day bed boasts a mellow rosewood colour. It has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received. It is impossible to re-create this colour if it has been re-polished.

This Victorian sofa would look superb in a variety of rooms, especially the living room or bedroom. The item would certainly grace any home or office and is a great investment, as it is extremely functional.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The chaise longue evolved from French daybed designs of the eighteenth century, becoming a standard item in nineteenth-century Victorian drawing rooms. Designed to accommodate reclining while remaining socially presentable, these pieces reflected nineteenth-century formal domestic living arrangements.

Framing was typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, often finished with french polish. Internal construction used steel coil springs, horsehair padding, and hand-laced webbing beneath woven wool, silk, or cotton damask fabrics.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples display hand-cut joinery, period-correct brass castors, and dark timber grain characteristics indicative of genuine rosewood. Stamped maker marks on the timber frame or castor fittings also assist with authentication.

Designers frequently position a chaise longue in a primary bedroom, dressing area, or quiet reading nook to add form without blocking sightlines. Neutral or contemporary wall finishes help highlight the distinct profile and woodwork of the frame.

Rosewood surfaces require gentle dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and occasional applications of natural beeswax, avoiding silicone polishes. Textile upholstery should be vacuumed using low suction with a soft brush attachment to prevent fabric degradation.
