Fine George III Style Satinwood & Rosewood Marquetry Sideboard

1900 - 1920
Description

An exceptional serpentine-front sideboard of refined neoclassical inspiration, executed in richly figured satinwood and rosewood with extensive polychrome and monochrome marquetry throughout. The façade is architecturally articulated with projecting canted corners and a bowed central section, raised on elegant square-tapered legs terminating in spade feet.

The twin central doors are framed within crossbanded reserves and quarter-veneered panels, each centred with an oval medallion depicting a classical urn draped with husk swags, finely inlaid against a dark ground. The frieze is adorned with continuous harebell and ribbon swags punctuated by stylised foliate motifs, all crisply rendered in contrasting veneers. The canted corner stiles are inlaid with trailing bellflower ornament within dark panels, providing vertical emphasis and balance to the composition.

The top is of particular distinction: a shaped serpentine surface inlaid with a large central oval medallion featuring scrolling anthemion and classical ornament, surrounded by a geometric parquetry field in contrasting timbers. A scrolling foliate border frames the perimeter, demonstrating highly accomplished cabinetmaking and precision veneer work.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

George III style marquetry furniture, influenced by designers such as Thomas Chippendale, George Hepplewhite, and Thomas Sheraton, features classical proportions and intricate wood inlays. Common motifs include urns, floral swags, drapery, and geometric borders, often executed using exotic timber veneers like satinwood, rosewood, and harewood.

Neoclassical inlaid cabinets typically utilise solid oak or pine frameworks faced with fine timber veneers. Primary decorative veneers include West Indian satinwood, tulipwood, and rosewood, with marquetry details crafted using ebony, boxwood, and stained fruitwoods.

Authentic period marquetry displays hand-cut timber veneers with subtle variation in thickness and texture. Look for hand-sawn drawer linings, hand-carved joinery such as irregular dovetails, and genuine natural patination along high-touch surface edges.

Position the piece as a focal point against a contemporary neutral backdrop to highlight the detailed woodwork. Pair it with modern minimalist wall lighting or oversized contemporary artwork above the cabinet to create a balanced dialogue between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Maintain satinwood veneer furniture by keeping it in a climate-controlled environment away from direct heat sources and sunlight, which can dry out adhesives and cause veneer lifting. Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax annually to preserve the timbers patination.
