Sheraton Revival Inlaid Satinwood Sideboard

1900 - 1920
Description

A finely executed Sheraton Revival sideboard of serpentine outline, veneered in richly figured satinwood and embellished throughout with contrasting crossbanding, ebony stringing, and classical marquetry panels. The façade is architecturally balanced, comprising three frieze drawers above a configuration of three cupboard doors, all raised on turned, tapering legs terminating in pad feet.

The rectangular top, subtly break-fronted, is decorated with an intricate parquetry field arranged in a diagonal lozenge pattern, framed within multiple bands of cross-grain veneer and fine boxwood stringing. The crisp geometry of the surface demonstrates careful cabinetmaking and precise veneer matching.

Below, the frieze contains three drawers fitted with cast brass oval handles featuring neoclassical urn motifs in relief, flanked by applied floral paterae mounts. The central drawer retains its working lock and escutcheon. Drawer interiors are constructed in solid timber with traditional joinery.

The cupboard doors are adorned with striking oval marquetry reserves set against ebonized grounds. The central panel depicts a classical urn overflowing with flowering foliage, rendered in contrasting veneers to create depth and tonal variation. The flanking doors display matching urn motifs in symmetrical composition. The marquetry is finely shaded and carefully cut, characteristic of high-quality furniture inspired by late 18th-century English design.

Vertical stiles are accented with darker banding, visually framing each section and enhancing the architectural rhythm of the piece. The interior reveals two shelved compartments, offering practical storage while maintaining refined external proportions.

Sheraton Revival furniture, popular from the late 19th through early 20th centuries, recreates the late 18th-century designs of Thomas Sheraton. Key features include delicate proportions, straight lines, light-coloured veneers such as satinwood, and fine marquetry inlay incorporating urns, floral garlands, and geometric borders.

These pieces predominantly feature satinwood veneers over pine or mahogany carcase timber. Decorative elements rely on contrasting wood inlays such as rosewood, ebony, and boxwood, complemented by cast brass handles and escutcheons.

Authentic Sheraton Revival sideboards exhibit late Victorian or Edwardian cabinet-making techniques, including machine-cut dovetailed drawers, solid brass hardware, precise veneer application, and smooth, consistent hand-inlaid marquetry panels.

A satinwood sideboard serves as a focal piece in a contemporary dining space, hallway, or living room. Pairing its warm golden hues with neutral wall palettes, clean-lined contemporary artwork, or modern lighting creates a balanced contrast between historical craft and modern design.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timber grain. Avoid placing the piece in direct sunlight or near heat sources to prevent the wood veneers from drying, cracking, or lifting.
