Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This late Victorian sofa belongs to the late nineteenth-century English country house tradition, presenting a compact settee form shaped from dark brown rosewood. The wooden frame displays delicate marquetry inlay along the arm supports and a simple moulding to the top rail, complemented by turned legs fitted with small brass castors. The piece is upholstered in a patterned tapestry fabric featuring cream, red, pink, green, and blue floral motifs, which covers the curved backrest, the sprung seat cushion, and the small pad to each armrest. The timber surfaces show visible marks and surface wear consistent with age and regular use over time. Measuring 135 cm in width, 75 cm in depth, and 90 cm in height, the sofa provides comfortable seating for two people. It suits placement in a sitting room, drawing room, or conservatory, where its decorative patterned upholstery and warm wooden tones blend easily with traditional and eclectic interior schemes.

FAQs

Late Victorian rosewood sofas are characterized by rich dark wood frames, delicate marquetry or stringing inlays, and compact proportions suited for drawing rooms of the late nineteenth century.

These pieces typically combine solid and veneered rosewood with ivory, bone, or contrasting wood inlays, anchored by turned timber legs set on brass castors and finished with woven upholstery.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut marquetry inlays, traditional joinery techniques, original period brass castors, and natural surface patination consistent with age.

Integrate the sofa alongside contemporary architectural lighting and neutral wall tones to allow the detailed timber inlays and patterned upholstery to serve as a focal contrast.

Position the piece away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage or fading, dust regularly with a soft dry cloth, and wax occasionally with high-grade beeswax.
