Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

French painted dressing tables gained prominence during the 18th century under the reign of Louis XV and Louis XVI, reflecting an era of refined courtly elegance and intimate boudoir culture. These pieces transitioned through various revival styles into the 19th and early 20th centuries, often featuring delicate hand-carved floral motifs and soft, pale polychrome finishes.

Traditional construction typically involves solid hardwoods such as beech or oak, complemented by intricate gesso or carved wooden appliques for floral swags. Caning is frequently integrated into the wings or back panels using traditional hand-weaving methods, while the finish relies on layered chalk paints, distemper, or historic oil-based pigments.

Authentication involves examining the joinery, such as hand-cut dovetails in the drawers, and inspecting the wear patterns on the painted surface and underlying wood. Genuine antique pieces exhibit period-appropriate tool marks, naturally aged patina, and traditional assembly methods rather than modern mechanical fixings.

This type of furniture serves as a focal point in a bedroom or dressing room, contrasting effectively against minimalist backdrops or rich, moody wall colours. Pairing the piece with a simple, understated stool and modern metallic or crystal accessories bridges historical craftsmanship with contemporary living spaces.

Preservation requires avoiding direct sunlight, excessive moisture, and chemical-based cleaning products that can degrade historical paint layers and gesso. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth and maintaining stable indoor humidity levels will protect both the wood structure and the delicate painted details.
