Eastern europe,moldova, circa 1920-30.

All woollen construction bessarabian kilim. Can use both sides,completely reversible.

This kilim is in very good condition with just a few surface marks in the ivory coloured border,imaged.

That said it doesn't have a massive price tag that these kilims can have. And of a good size.

9 foot 9 inches by 6 foot 1 inches. 297cm X 186cm. At widest points. Fringes not measured in size.

Bessarabian kilims originated in the late 18th and 19th centuries in the region between the Dniester and Prut rivers. These textiles blended local folk weaving traditions with Western European floral patterns, often influenced by French Aubusson designs popular among nobility.

These rugs are traditionally hand-woven using locally sourced spun wool on cotton or wool warps. The flatweave technique creates a reversible, pileless structure using tapestry slit-weave methods to produce defined geometric and floral motifs.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural vegetable dye variations (abrash), detailed floral and medallion motifs with dark outlines, and traditional slit-weave construction. Hand-knotted fringe ends and minor weave irregularities also indicate genuine hand-loom production.
