Pair Japanese Meiji Cloisonne Lidded Gourd Pots

Description

This is a good pair of Japanese meiji lidded jars and covers in super condition dating from around 1890. The jars have a great shape of squat fluted form with domed lids and are beautifully decorated with colourful, intricate floral, bird and insect wirework on a black enamel ground. These are standing on three pierced shaped feet and are in excellent condition with original finial to each.

The jars are 12 cms high by 13 cms in diameter.

This era represents a pinnacle of technical skill, characterised by intricate wirework and opaque or translucent vitreous glass pastes fused onto brass or copper bodies.
