The Charles II style, also known as the Restoration period, spans the late 17th century and is characterised by a shift towards more elaborate carving, rich textiles, and the frequent use of native oak and walnut following the return of the monarchy in 1660.

Furniture from this era was predominantly constructed using solid English oak, frequently supplemented with pine for secondary elements like drawer linings, and assembled using traditional pegged mortise and tenon joints.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetails, handmade wrought iron or brass hardware, hand-planed surfaces with tool marks, and natural timber shrinkage and oxidisation consistent with centuries of age.

Such foundational antique pieces ground contemporary living spaces by introducing rich textures and historical contrast, working effectively when paired with minimalist upholstery and neutral walls to let the timber grain take centre stage.

Preserve antique timber by maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight, occasionally applying traditional beeswax to nourish the wood without sealing it with modern varnishes.
