Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian pedestal desk consists of a flat top resting on two free-standing drawer units, known as pedestals, creating a central kneehole space. Popularised in the nineteenth century, these desks were designed for formal writing and administrative tasks in home studies and offices.

Nineteenth-century desks were predominantly constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, often featuring flame mahogany veneers on drawer fronts. The writing surface typically incorporates a gold-tooled leather skiver alongside hand-dovetailed drawer joinery and brass locks.

Authentic nineteenth-century desks feature hand-cut dovetail joints inside the drawers, cast brass keyhole escutcheons, and natural wear patterns on the drawer runners. Examining the underside of the pedestals typically reveals original construction marks and hand-sawn timber boards.

A Victorian mahogany desk can be paired with contemporary task lighting or a modern desk chair to create a balanced workspace. Positioning the desk near natural light sources highlights the rich timber grain and leather work while maintaining day-to-day functionality.

Preserve the mahogany timber by applying a high-quality beeswax polish along the grain, avoiding silicone-based aerosol sprays. The leather insert should be dusted with a dry soft cloth and occasionally treated with a dedicated leather conditioner to prevent drying and cracking.
