Antique Ziegler Rug

19th century
Description

A rare, small size antique Ziegler Sultanabad rug with a finer weave than usually found.  The border is typical of Ziegler weavings with a repeating flower and vine design, with a rich, wonderful deep red background field colour, and elegant medallion design.  Some subtle changes in the red background we can see as definitive lines going across the rug which often is mistaken for wear or restoration.  It is actually a dye change which we use the term 'abrash' for.  Antique Ziegler rugs and carpets are some of the most desirable carpets and rugs from the late 19th century and are beautiful coverings for the floor.

This classical Ziegler pattern was more often woven in larger carpet sizes, which makes us feel this sweet and rare little rug was commissioned to maybe be an accompaniment to a larger carpet.  Possibly for the same room, often for a bay window area.

Condition wise it is excellent, with a fine wool pile all over.  Minimal restoration has happened at either end, but done incredibly well by expert weavers.

In 1883, Ziegler and Co, of Manchester, England established a Persian carpet manufacture in Sultanabad Persia, which employed designers from major western department stores such as B. Altman & Co of New York and  Liberty, to modify 16th- and 17th-century Eastern designs for the more restrained western taste. Using highly developed dying techniques, and the best artisans from the region, the Ziegler Co created rugs with bold all-over patterns and with softer palettes than their vibrant Persian counterparts.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Ziegler rugs were originally commissioned in Persia during the late nineteenth century by Ziegler & Co. of Manchester to create oriental carpets tailored specifically for Western aesthetic preferences and room proportions.

Traditional Ziegler carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a durable cotton warp and weft foundation, frequently coloured with natural dyes.

Authentic hand-knotted Persian rugs display subtle knotting variations on the reverse side, natural colour variations known as abrash, and fringe threads integrated directly into the warp.

A rich red oriental rug anchors neutral living spaces or dining rooms, adding depth and contrast when paired with natural timber furniture, neutral upholstery, or leather seating.

Vacuum gently using suction only without a rotating brush, rotate the rug periodically to ensure even wear, spot-clean spills immediately with cold water, and arrange professional dry cleaning when required.
