Large English decorative charger plate in Patent Ironstone China, produced in the early 20th century. The plate features a strong yellow ground with an exotic bird and floral decoration, finished with hand-applied enamels and gilding over a transfer-printed base. The moulded scalloped rim with gilt edge adds to its visual impact and reflects the quality of Mason’s Edwardian decorative output, circa 1915.
The pattern follows established late Victorian Mason’s designs influenced by Japanese decorative art, which remained popular with buyers well into the Edwardian period. Pieces of this type were relatively costly to manufacture and were intended as decorative display items.
The base bears the Mason’s Patent Ironstone mark, the registered design number Rd No 652974 (British Registered Design system, Board of Trade), impressed factory codes “W5H”, and a handwritten factory reference “c. 1460”.
