Description

South west persia,circa 1900.

Fine and unusual design qashqai kashkuli.

Particular details of almost abstract like stiff floral designs within the midnight blue field and within the red surroundings. Spot the pair of animal motifs with chequer design bodies towards the bottom of the blue field.

For me the broad main turquoise border of floral motifs almost becoming stiff abstract interpretations compliments its overall unusual look for this tribal group. A thoroughly individual and spontaneously laid out designed tribal weaving.

Size is 6 foot 7 inches by 4 foot 9 inches. 201cm X 145cm. At widest points. All wool construction. Pile is fine and velvety.

Even low pile. Top end with an edge repair imaged both sides. Not that noticeable from the front.

Qashqai Kashkuli rugs are hand-knotted textiles crafted by the Kashkuli, a prominent sub-tribe of the nomadic Qashqai confederation in southwestern Iran. Traditionally woven on portable looms using locally sourced hand-spun wool, these rugs are celebrated for having the finest weave density and most refined geometric and floral designs among Qashqai tribal weaving groups.

These rugs are constructed using a hand-spun wool pile woven onto a wool warp and weft foundation. Woven using asymmetric or symmetric knots, they incorporate natural plant and mineral dyes to produce saturated shades of madder red, indigo blue, soft green, and ivory.

Authentic pieces feature a noticeably fine weave compared to other tribal rugs, flexible wool foundations, and minor organic variations in colour known as abrash. Design characteristics include central diamond medallions, stylised tree-of-life motifs, animal figures, and complex multi-band floral borders.
