Marble Portrait Bust of a Gentleman

19th century
Description

Carved marble portrait bust depicting a formally dressed gentleman with closely cropped hair, prominent moustache, and short beard. The subject is shown wearing a tailored jacket with lapels, waistcoat, and bow tie, executed with restrained realism and careful facial modelling. The shoulders are broadly carved, terminating above a shaped, integral socle base.

The marble exhibits a warm cream colouration with natural veining and areas of golden patina throughout, consistent with age and material. The surface retains a soft polish, with visible hand-finishing in recessed areas, particularly to the reverse. The initials C.D.

A dignified and well-executed sculptural work, suitable for decorative or collection display.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the Victorian era, carved marble portrait busts were commissioned to commemorate prominent figures, family members, or individuals of social standing. These works reflected classical Roman and Greek sculptural traditions while capturing contemporary 19th-century fashion and grooming styles.

Sculptors selected fine-grained white or cream metamorphic marble, working with chisels, rasps, and hand-polishing abrasives. Sculptures were typically carved from a single block of stone and often mounted upon an integral or separate stepped socle base.

Authenticity is evaluated through visible tool marks, hand-finished hair and facial details, natural surface oxidisation, and era-specific clothing details such as lapel styles and neckwear. Period pieces often exhibit gentle surface patination or subtle yellowing acquired over time.

A carved portrait bust provides visual anchor points when positioned on a mantelpiece, sturdy side table, or within bookshelf styling. Pairing classical stonework with minimalist background finishes creates an engaging juxtaposition of textures and eras.

Dust marble surfaces regularly using a clean, soft-bristled dry brush or microfiber cloth. Avoid acidic cleaning chemicals, household sprays, or excessive water, as marble is porous and prone to staining or surface erosion.
