Description

A beautiful antique burr walnut leather top kidney shaped desk. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1920’s period.

The quality is outstanding, this has a beautiful design and is a very practical size. The kidney shaped top has an inset black leather writing surface and walnut banding around the edges. There are five drawers which have detailed brass handles and nicely dovetailed joints. This stands on cabriole legs with shell carving at the knees, the back is also nicely polished, so this can be used as a free standing item.

We have had this re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age, with just some minor wear remaining beneath the polish here and there.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Kidney-shaped desks first gained popularity during the late 18th and 19th centuries, favoured for their ergonomic design that allowed the user to sit comfortably within the curve while maximising surface workspace.

These pieces typically feature a solid wood framework, such as mahogany or walnut, overlaid with highly figured burr walnut veneers, and are often finished with a tooled leather writing insert and cast brass hardware.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawer construction, natural timber shrinkage patterns, period-appropriate brass fixings, and genuine patination on the wood and leather surfaces.

Pairing a historic wooden desk with minimalist modern seating creates a striking focal point, balancing traditional craftsmanship with clean, contemporary interior lines.

Protect the surfaces by keeping them away from direct sunlight and heat sources, regularly treating the timber with appropriate wax polish, and cleaning the leather with a damp cloth followed by a neutral leather cream.
