Copeland Late Spode ‘Indian Sporting Scenes’ Rare Side Plate – The Hog Deer at Bay

A fine example of a rare Copeland late Spode Indian Sporting Scenes side plate titled “The Hog Deer at Bay.” The plate carries the impressed “Copeland late Spode” mark along with the printed pattern name. Diameter: 18 cm.

This pattern, with these specific marks, was produced only between 1829 and 1833, a very short run of just four years. The plate is in excellent, original condition, free from chips, cracks, restoration, or significant wear.

• Origin: The Indian Sporting Scenes series began with Spode around 1809 and continued into the Copeland period. Designs were inspired by Samuel Howitt’s coloured engravings from Captain Thomas Williamson’s Oriental Field Sports, Wild Sports of the East (1807).

• • Scenes: The series includes a variety of titled hunting scenes such as “The Hog Deer at Bay,” “Hunting a Hog Deer,” and “Death of the Bear.” Titles were typically printed on the reverse.
