Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This unusual 17th century Baroque cast iron fireback is finished in a dark brown colour and measures 70 cm high, 64 cm wide, and 3 cm deep in practical terms. The front presents a biblical scene rendered in raised relief carvings, including cherubs alongside classical decorations, foliate swags, and arched cresting. Fluted side columns frame the central figurative panel, whilst decorative mouldings outline the arched top and base. The dark iron surface shows a uniform aged texture with signs of wear consistent with its unrestored condition, retaining visible casting marks across the relief details. Originally designed for hearth protection within an English Country House setting, this piece serves as a decorative focal point in a period fireplace or can be displayed as a wall-mounted architectural element in a traditional living space.

FAQs

Cast iron firebacks were developed during the late medieval and Renaissance periods to protect brickwork from heat damage while reflecting radiant warmth forward into the room.

Traditional firebacks were cast in heavy iron using sand-moulding techniques, where carved wooden patterns or clay reliefs impressed decorative designs into the sand prior to pouring liquid iron.

Authentic pieces exhibit uneven casting textures, hand-finished edges, natural iron oxidisation, and signs of prolonged thermal wear or pitting near the lower centre where fuel burned.

Firebacks can be mounted inside functional or decorative fireplace alcoves, displayed on sturdy stands, or positioned behind wood-burning stoves as architectural focal points.

Maintenance involves brushing away loose soot with a soft bristle brush and applying traditional black grate polish or paste wax to protect against corrosion and maintain the dark finish.
